Car Hire in Turkey for UK Travellers: What to Check Before You Book

Driving in Turkey gives you freedom. The roads are generally good (often better than UK potholes!), but the driving style is... different.

1. Who to Book With?

Cizgi, Enterprise, Avis. Local companies (Cizgi is a favourite) often don't require a huge credit card deposit and include full insurance. International brands are stricter but reliable.

2. Automatic vs Manual

Automatics are common but slightly more expensive. Given the hills in places like Kalkan or the traffic in Istanbul, an Automatic is highly recommended for stress-free driving.

3. HGS (Tolls)

Turkish motorways use an automatic toll system (HGS). The sticker is on the windscreen. You don't stop to pay. The rental company will calculate the usage when you return the car.

4. The Driving Style

Expect overtaking from the right, sparing use of indicators, and horns (used to say "I am here", not just "I am angry"). Drive defensively and confidentally.
